The 2013 edition of the State of Mediterranean Forests (http://www.fao.org/docrep/017/i3226e/i3226e.pdf) co-published by FAO and Plan Bleu was a great success thanks to a huge collective effort to which most of you have contributed. The State of Mediterranean Forests aims at becoming a reference series on Mediterranean forests, giving key statistics on Mediterranean forests, showing their change over time, and highlighting the most important questions and challenges that Mediterranean forests face. To this end, the secretariat of Silva Mediterranea and Plan Bleu would like to launch the preparation of the 2018 edition of the State of Mediterranean Forests. More than an update of the 2013 edition, we wish that this 2018 edition will deal with the new questions and challenges that have raised regarding Mediterranean forests.

To start this work, we would like to have your opinion and suggestions regarding

• (1)    Three main topics that could be addressed in the 2018 edition of the State of Mediterranean Forests.
• (2)    Three main modifications and additions that could be brought to the topics already addressed in 2013 (in terms of both form and content).

We would greatly appreciate receiving your suggestions (only a few lines are needed) within two weeks. The next step will consist in setting up an editorial committee that will decide, based on the propositions made for the topics of the 2018 State of Mediterranean Forests, on the general orientation of the new edition and on a tentative table of contents (chapter divisions).

Greetings from Turkey. I am so happy to learn that the preparations of the State of Mediterranean Forests 2018 has started. My proposals are below. I also added some more detail for clarification. From my side, I am ready to support these preparations and willing to be part of editorial committee.

(1)    Three main topics that could be addressed in the 2018 edition of the State of Mediterranean Forests.

• a.      Restoration of Mediterranean Forest Landscapes and Achieving Land Degradation Neutral Mediterranean Region
• b.      Forest related institutions (including Government Agencies, Universities, NGO’s, Private Sector etc) and cooperation on forestry issues among Mediterranean Countries
• c.       Possible supporting activities for forest goods and services and institutions

(2)    Three main modifications and additions that could be brought to the topics already addressed in 2013 (in terms of both form and content). (Please see my proposal with bold and italic)

As we already know, SMF 2013 edition has five main chapters as follow;

• ·  1.       Towards sustainable development in the Mediterranean: challenges to face
• ·  2.       State of forest resources in the Mediterranean region
• ·  3.       Legal, policy and institutional framework
• ·  4.       Some key issues for adaptation of Mediterranean forests to climate change
• ·  5.       Conclusions

Since this first edition there has been several important international conferences and several resolutions adopted. Some of them as follow;

We are referring to the new edition of the State of Mediterranean Forests (SoMF) with the aim to give you a short feedback on the survey that we sent you on 15 January 2016. We have received more than 20 answers that already enabled us to clarify the outline of the future edition of the SoMF. You will find enclosed an overview table where we have grouped comments depending of the similarity of their subject. We thank those who have answered, and welcome those who still wish to answer to do it.

The next step will consist in organizing a meeting of the partners who wish to commit themselves on a voluntary basis in the preparation of the SoMF, as chapter coordinators and/or as authors. We shall use the results of the preliminary survey as a basis for the table of contents of the SoMF. This table of contents will be specified during the meeting. We shall share with you very soon the terms of reference and the date for this meeting that will be held in Rome, but we also invite you to complete a Doodle survey at http://doodle.com/poll/7466ape32f4ky8be to identify a meeting date that is the most suitable.

I am contacting you with regard to your appointment as coordinator of the Silva Mediterranea working Group 8 on “Desertification and restoration in Mediterranean drylands”. Following the key recommendations made during the kick-off meeting of the working group (16th October 2015) that was organized at the Turkish Pavilion at the margins of the UNCCD COP 12,  in Ankara, we would like to discuss and exchange some ideas on the first WG activities as planned in the workshop report (available here), including:

•  The Vth Mediterranean Forest Week (Morocco, 2017) which will be held on the theme of Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR);
•   The launch of a Mediterranean initiative on FLR during UNFCCC COP 22 (Morocco, 2016);
•  A contribution to the future edition of the “State of Mediterranean Forests” (possibly based on data from FAO’s “Global Drylands Assessment” to be released in 2016);
• Dissemination and implementation of the FAO “Global guidelines for the restoration of degraded forests and landscapes in drylands”.

We would like to discuss these issues with you before the Enlarged Executive Committee of Silva Mediterranea to be held Friday 8 April 2016 in Rome at FAO HQ and to which you have been already invited. As you know, this  Silva Mediterranea Committee meeting, Coordinators of each of the 8 working groups will have to present and update participants on working groups work plans and their status of implementation.  Please refer to the email below and concept note attached sent by my colleague Nicolas Picard.
